How Counseling Can Make Your Illinois Divorce or Separation Easier

When a marriage is failing, and one or both partners want a divorce, it can be traumatic for the whole family. Feelings that range from anger and fear to grief to depression can set in, making it difficult to make good decisions and plan for the future.

Going to counseling to work through a divorce can provide a safe place to express and share difficult emotions, creating an atmosphere in which the couple feels encouraged and empowered to come to arrangements that will set the whole family up for their new lives.

What Is Divorce Counseling?

Marital counseling, divorce counseling, and discernment counseling are all services couples can use to help get them through the entire process, from deciding to get a divorce to solving any post-divorce issues that may arise.

Divorce counseling does not seek to lay blame on either party. What it can do is arm participants with the skills to work through difficulties and differences such as custody, visitation, parenting schedules, and parenting plans. Using divorce counseling often brings about more self-knowledge and personal growth.

  • Marital Counseling is an excellent choice when a marriage is in distress, and the couple wants to try to keep the marriage together. If, in the end, the marriage cannot be repaired, a couple can continue with the marriage counselor to see them through the divorce. This can work well, especially since the couple has already established a relationship of trust with this counselor.

  • Discernment Counseling works with couples who may be on the fence about getting a divorce or in which one spouse wants a divorce, and the other seeks reconciliation. Discernment counseling can support both partners where they are with an aim toward making a decision on how to move forward, either together or apart.

  • Divorce Counseling is best suited for those who have made a decision to divorce but want help hashing out the logistics and issues they need to face. Often, this type of counseling helps couples resolve issues so they can use mediation as a divorce tool instead of going to court.
